Boys And Girls Short Story English Literature Essay The short story by Alice Munro belongs to the collection of works Dance of the Happy Shades and is entitled Boys and Girls. It is written from the female perspective that makes it original, as the writers more often turn to description of the world with the eyes of men, the type of story dealing with girls world-view is less common. However, it appears to be remarkably interesting to trace the changes that occur in the mind of the female narrator, as she describes the events from childhood with youthful viewpoint. This makes her descriptions of life filled with social prejudice where women are often inferior to men are true to life and dynamic due to Munros irony. The example can be made as Munro describes the female narrator being harsh and at times wild and at the same time shows her reverent attitude to her appearance. Besides the feminist theme of the short story and a strife for freedom in the society that lived according to the unwritten rules where men always dominated, it can be noticed that there unfolds a common family drama in all the complexity of human relations in terms of which the generation gap comes to the scene. Moreover, the situation is aggravated as the narrator overcomes transitional period in her life, the girl leaves her childhood and enters her adulthood. It created an atmosphere that was predetermined by the family business. Father looked forward to his daughter become a helping hand for the whole family as she grows up, he treats her with respect and flatters calling her a new hired hand. As the narrator obeys her father, appreciates his wisdom and industry, she feels his role in her upbringing, one day she, however, contrives to disobey him. The girl does not know the reason of her deed but she opens the gate wide instead of shutting it as her father asks and the horse gallops away. She fears to lose his trust that is important for her, but she did not regret. Trying to conceal her fault was vain as her younger brother Laird gives her away. Father is wise enough to be quite and speaks with resignation dropping only several words: Shes only a girl. Earlier they would strike her like a thunder, but it turned out that she grew up, something changed in her forever and she got rid of her childhood fears and habits, the girl was turning into a woman, revealing her female nature, hence, she said: I didnt protest that, even in my heart. The girls mother that is contrasted to father seems to be more friendly towards her daughter, if she was feeling cheerfulà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦she could tell all sorts of things, while her father didnt talkà ¢Ã¢â ¬Ã ¦unless it was about the job they did. The girl was shy about her father and did not ask him questions, but worked willingly under his eyes and was proud of that. The girl tells of her mixed feeling towards mother, she feels the pressure and hurries to leave the house before mother gives her another task to do, in turn mother blames her for not helping about the house. Mother seems too preoccupied with her housework, though it may be also regarded as lack of attention and care for her children who were needed mainly as a helping hand for the endless work in the house. Mother denounced her daughters actions and often talked to her in a dead-quiet regretful way and she was always plotting striving to keep the girl inside the house, exercising her power. This resulted in the childs rebellion, her obstinacy as the narrator tried to keep herself free from the unwritten rules of the society as well as total control of her actions. Despite mother was, according to the girl, kinder than father and more easily fooled, but you couldnt depend on her, as she showed that she did not know about the way things really were. Mother did not seem so dear to the heart of the girl as father was, numerously proving his humaneness and love, in spite of the cruelty he had to resort to in everyday life. Readers are shown the stereotypical farm life in Canada, but the characters revive on the pages of the story and readers witness all the transformation they undergo, may judge about their life, actions and motives, sympathize and condemn them.

An Organic Dissection of a Tutoring Session When Delvin (that's what I will call him) walked into the Writing Resource Center I was a little worried because I knew him from another class and a few social events, besides talking with him on occasion around the campus. I had had a bad experience earlier in the year when tutoring a friend of mine who'd asked me to help him with punctuation. I ended up just giving him a punctuation sheet and tried to work on some deeper level problems with word choices and development. He didn't see the problems or seem to want help in those areas, so he was offended at my attitude towards the content of his paper. (He thought that it was a near final draft except for a little editing.) Right away, though, Delvin said that his paper was in an early draft stage and he need some help "making it clear" because he was dealing with a difficult topic for Philosophy 205, Aesthetics. Now, Aesthetics is a complex topic dealing with ideas, objects, feelings, and theories as to what is beautiful and what is ugly. And Philosophy has a mode of thinking that is complex. At the time of my session with Delvin I didn't make the connection between the two, but prior writing to this paper the magnets reached their poles: the connection between philosophical thinking and writing development and also their ability, when done properly, to deal with complex issues. The main connection between the two is their ability to start with a topic and break it down into simple ideas and then reconstruct it into a theory or paper that displays, argues, questions, or proves the topic to a reader or listener. The philosophers main mode of dissecting a topic is by questioning every factor that is relevant (and even some that are irrelevant.) This is basically the same thing a writer should do when he or she begins to organize his or her paper. They need to find out, "who did what, when, where, and why?" Many writers and philosophers can organize these questions and answers in their head so that it makes sense to them, but the problem lies when they have to communicate multitudes of simple ideas to someone other than themselves. The overall idea won't make much sense to a reader if the writer spits it out like a madman babbling about the apocalypse.

Bad Grades Equals No Driverââ¬â¢s License Essay
Imagine if you were in high school and you werenââ¬â¢t the brightest student, which resulted in bad grades, and then there was a policy made where you couldnââ¬â¢t even get your driverââ¬â¢s license until your grades got up and stayed up. This is a policy that is being debated on by some legislators who think itââ¬â¢s a good policy and some who donââ¬â¢t think itââ¬â¢s such a good policy. I would be siding with the legislators who donââ¬â¢t think itââ¬â¢s a good policy. Itââ¬â¢s not a good policy because I feel like itââ¬â¢s not really the legislators place. Also, students would be getting good grades for the wrong reasons. Lastly, someoneââ¬â¢s academic in school doesnââ¬â¢t have anything to do with the ability to drive. Legislators trying to make a policy, that teenagers should be required to maintain a ââ¬Å"Câ⬠average in school before receiving a driverââ¬â¢s license is a bad idea. I feel that it isnââ¬â¢t really the legislators place to decide that only kids with good grades get their driverââ¬â¢s license. Itââ¬â¢s only the parents/ guardians place to decide if their own child should get their driverââ¬â¢s license or not. It would almost be taking some freedom away, because parents/guardians can raise their children however they want, that isnââ¬â¢t illegal of course, but if legislators pass this policy, thatââ¬â¢s something parents donââ¬â¢t have a say in when raising their children. Some parents may want their teen to have their driverââ¬â¢s license even if the teen doesnââ¬â¢t have good grades. Some may not, but itââ¬â¢s the parentsââ¬â¢ choice. An example is if the parent needed the teen to be able to drive around and do errands for them because the parent is too busy but their grades arenââ¬â¢t to the policyââ¬â¢s requirements, then the teen wouldnââ¬â¢t be able to help their parents out because thereââ¬â¢s a policy against teens getting their license while having bad grades. Also, if the parent had become temporarily or even permanently disabled and couldnââ¬â¢t drive but needed to be chauffeured places by their teen who is old enough to have a license but isnââ¬â¢t allowed to because of his grades. Situations like the examples are reasons why the policy is a bad idea. Parents should have a right to make the decision not the legislators. If this policy were to be passed students would be getting good grades for the wrong reasons. Teens wouldnââ¬â¢t be trying to get good grades for their future; theyââ¬â¢ll be doing it because they want to be able to receive the driverââ¬â¢s license. Theyââ¬â¢d forget all about what good grades does for them in their career life, because theyââ¬â¢d be so focused on maintaining their grades for the driving privileges. Also, itââ¬â¢s almost similar to bribing teens into getting good grades, instead of encouraging them to so theyââ¬â¢ll have a brighter future. Once they get out of high school theyââ¬â¢ll have the instinct to only get things done if they get something in return. That isnââ¬â¢t the best instinct to live by because itââ¬â¢ll cause them to not do certain not-so-pleasant things when they get to college or the real world like go grocery shopping, paying their student loans, or even doing their work in college because theyââ¬â¢ll be expecting something material in return, all because they grew accustomed to only doing the things you need to when youââ¬â¢re getting something in return. Someone that is for this policy would most likely argue that a student with good grades would lead to better drivers on the road. If the student is truly trying to get good grades then they are getting smarter and when theyââ¬â¢re ready to drive theyââ¬â¢ll make smarter decisions on the road. Statistics show that, â⬠In 2005, 46% of U.S. 12th-grade students scored ââ¬Å"below basicâ⬠on the NAEP (National Assessment of Educational Progress) National science scale 18% scored ââ¬Å"proficientâ⬠or above, and 2% scored ââ¬Å"advancedâ⬠â⬠( Agus, Jessica.). This statistic proves how not many students are doing as good, considering the majority of them scored ââ¬Å"below basicsâ⬠. However, if we were to pass the policy then the score would most likely rise because students would be working harder in school and doing what they need to do. It could possibly give the student a better comprehension level and decision making level, so when they do begin dr iving the people around them along with themselves will be safer. However, their argument would be invalid considering that studentsââ¬â¢ grades/ intelligence level and their driving skills donââ¬â¢t have anything to do with the other. If students are getting good grades in school it doesnââ¬â¢t necessarily mean that their driving skills are going to be equal with the intelligence level. Besides, in an article it reads that, ââ¬Å"The mean grade point average for female high school graduates was 3.10 in 2009, .33 higher than the average GPA for young women in 1990. The average GPA for male high school graduates over the same period rose .31 points to 2.90.â⬠and that, ââ¬Å"Some say this means American high schools are churning out smarter, harder-working students.â⬠( U.S. News). This evidence proves that the policy that students should have good grades before they can receive their license is unnecessary because students are already doing better grade wise. I canââ¬â¢t say myself for a fact that teens driving skills are bet ter, but I can say in an opinion that it probably hasnââ¬â¢t changed. I believe that the policy isnââ¬â¢t needed for teens to do better in school because students are doing it themselves without the bribing. Legislatorsââ¬â¢ deciding to make a policy, that teenagers should be required to have a ââ¬Å"Câ⬠grade average in school before being able to receive a driverââ¬â¢s license isnââ¬â¢t a bright idea. It isnââ¬â¢t the legislators place to decide that only kids with good grades get their driverââ¬â¢s license. Chronicle of a Death Foretold: a Crime Novel? Essay

EA Swanepoel 48170399 26 March 2012 Gabriel Garcia Marquezââ¬â¢s Chronicle of a Death Foretold is a narration spoken from the different viewpoints of the residents of a river town in Colombia. The novel embarks on an exploration into an unsettling crime to arrive at a solution in order to explain a murder. Many years after the death of protagonist, Santiago Nasar, his close friend returns ââ¬Å"twentyseven years laterâ⬠(Marquez 1981:1) to question the residents present on the day of the murder. Through analysing into the past, the story turns investigative and portrays elements of a detective novel. A typical crime novel usually portrays the author opening the story with a problem (Sansalvador, G. 2010. Film, Literature and Society. Only study guide for WLL2602. Pretoria: University of South Africa), such as the need to solve a crime and discover the perpetrators, the victim or motives behind the crime. The reader is not kept in suspense to be headed to the crime, but is instead made aware of the crime from the beginning. The rest of the novel usually details the crime, obtains clues and solves the problem. The problem is known to the reader beforehand; it is the development of the problem that the reader is oblivious to therefore, the solving plays a crucial part in a detective novel. Such can be found in Chronicle of a Death Foretold, when the first paragraph sets the crime for the reader. The opening statement, ââ¬Å"On the day they were going to kill himâ⬠(1981:1), portrays the crime. The reader realises the offense before discovering how it happened. Thus, it is the duty of the narrator, acting as detective, to examine facts and study reports. The narrator does indeed act as detective. He comes ââ¬Å"back to search out the last pieces of testimonyâ⬠(1981:87) and tries ââ¬Å"to put the broken mirror of memory back together from so many scattered shardsâ⬠(1981:5). According to Hannah Wallace and W.C. Miller (2006) the narrator continues to give a journalistic explanation of an actual murder. More details are given in the first line of the book. Perhaps like a true detective, the narrator provides little details which otherwise would be forgotten or deemed irrelevant. We learn that the victim is Santiago Nasar; that he ââ¬Å"got up at five-thirty in the morningâ⬠and that he had waited ââ¬Å"for the boat the bishop was coming onâ⬠(1981:1). As is seen throughout the novel, the narrator often states the time in which certain affairs take place, in order to give the reader a timeline of events. The first line refers to ââ¬Å"theyâ⬠; the perpetrators of the crime, indicating that the narrator already knows who ââ¬Å"theyâ⬠are (later to be confirmed on page 14). As an investigative narrative unfolds, the detective finds and reveals clues along the investigative journey. The detective goes forth undertaking various methods of investigation, such as questioning and reading reports. In doing so, he finds evidence that would allow for the consummation of the solution. The detective in Chronicle of a Death Foretold questions numerous people in order to hear their side of the story. It is here where the novel adopts many narrators, each recalling events from his or her point of view. ââ¬Å"All the many people he ran into after leaving his houseâ⬠¦ remembered himâ⬠¦Ã¢â¬ (1981:2) and gave accounts of that day. The detective has to sift through the various interpretations in order to find similarities and discover any falsehoods. The narrator interviews Santiago Nasarââ¬â¢s mother, Placida Linero, where she explains that ââ¬Å"the front door, except for festive occasions, remained closed and barredâ⬠(1981:10). This is one clue where the narrator slips into the story. It is only later that the reader realises why it was mentioned at all. The narrator continues on suspicions such as Angela Vicarioââ¬â¢s purity because ââ¬Å"no one would have thought nor did anyone say that Angela Vicario wasnââ¬â¢t a virginâ⬠(1981:37). Some thought well of him while others ââ¬Å"recalled [him] without affectionâ⬠(1981:7). It is also noteworthy that the narrator, although acting detective, relays to the reader his own perspective of Santiago Nasar. Therefore, while the reader hears accounts from various witnesses, the ultimate perception of Santiago Nasar is that of the narrator. As a result, it could be said that the narrator loses the professionalism of a detective. Furthermore, the imaginative detail given by the narrator works against the journalistic style found in a detective novel, and ââ¬Å"sends the reader into several different conceptual areas between reality and fiction that he then has to disentangleâ⬠(SparkNote Editors). Another point is brought to attention. ââ¬Å"There is no mystery surrounding the death of Santiago Nasarâ⬠(Wallace, Hannah. Miller, W.C. 2006) therefore, the reader questions the intention of the detective. The detective eventually arrives at a solution and thus, completes the investigation. It could possibly be said that the narrator in Chronicle of a Death Foretold wishes to find the reason why no one bothered to stop the Vicario brothers from murdering Santiago Nasar because ââ¬Å"many of those who were on the docks knew they were going to kill Santiago Nasar.â⬠(1081:18). It is also discussed, although chance events proved wrong, that ââ¬Å"no one even wondered whether Santiago Nasar [had] been warned, because it seemed impossible to all that he hadnââ¬â¢t.â⬠(1981:19). As the detective realises that someone did try warning Santiago Nasar by slipping a note under his doorway before the murder (1981:13), he learns and reveals to the reader that it was not found until after the chaos surrounding the murder. The narrator never truly finds out if Angela Vicario was telling the truth about Santiago Nasar, and many doubted because ââ¬Å"no one had ever seen them together, much less alone togetherâ⬠(1981:90). She swore to the judge it was him ââ¬Å"but with no further precision of either how or whereâ⬠(1981:101). The narrator argues with the validity of the arrest (or the non-arrest) of the Vicario brothers. Nevertheless Colonel Aponte asserts that ââ¬Å"no one is arrested just on suspicionâ⬠(1981:57). Whether this was true of the law, it may very well be that Gabriel Garcia Marquez inserted this line to show how Colonel Aponte, and others, tries justifying his actions. The narrator reveals why the Vicario brothers never saw the light in Santiago Nasarââ¬â¢s bedroom go on. ââ¬Å"He didnââ¬â¢t have to turn on any light to reach his bedroom because the bulb on the stairway stayed lit through the nightâ⬠(1981:64). After finding the solution, typically the detective will give explanations of the murder. Why did no one warn Santiago Nasar? People thought he already knew (1981:19) and ââ¬Å"the people were too excited with the bishopââ¬â¢s visit to worry about any other newsâ⬠(1981:20). The narrator provides a list of events for the reader (1981:48-69; 10304) along with a summary (1981:84). While explaining the solution though, the reader is taken back and forth to interviews with residents. Therefore the narrator is still in the phase of discovering truths, while explaining solutions already found. This is perhaps not so typical of a detective novel. On the other hand, the ââ¬Å"back and forthâ⬠eventually allows for the narrator to bring the information together so that the reader can perceive how events have turned out. He continues to explain other questions such as why Placida Linero locked the door (1981:119). The uncertainty the crime Santiago Nasar committed is never solved but the narrator provides a reason why it was uncertain. It was because the judge did not find ââ¬Å"a single indication, not even the most unlikely one, that Santiago Nasar had been the cause of the wrongâ⬠(1981:100). An explanation of the aftermath of the murder is given (1981:84-99); the narrator adding that ââ¬Å"most of those who could have done something to prevent the crime and still didnââ¬â¢t do it consoled themselvesâ⬠(1981:98), which further proves the residents trying to justify their actions. In essence, Gabriel Garcia Marquez wrote Chronicle of a Death Foretold as an inspired novel (based on true events, Sansalvador, G. 2010) providing a description (or chronicle) of the crime. The narrator and his personal relationship with the victim and the residents, tells the story from his point of view, although he allows others chance to tell theirs. He has read the autopsy report (1981:75) and has scavenged ââ¬Å"some 322 pages filched from the more than 500 that the brief must have had.â⬠(1981:100) Chronicle of a Death Foretold, although not a detective novel, uses elements thereof and turns journalistic as the narrator ââ¬Å"recovered numerous marginal experiencesâ⬠(1981:43) in order to write up a chronicle based on the ââ¬Å"last pieces of testimonyâ⬠(1981:87 SOURCES CONSULTED Dictionary.com. Both the Executive and Legislative branches of our federal government have taken on many contours of responsibility as generations have bestowed upon them more unique and complex matters. Originally, the Constitution allowed for Congress to possess the sole accountability for any and all war making decisions by furnishing it the right to declare war via military action . However, it also provides that the President is to be the Commander-in-Chief of said armed forces . Seemingly, a clear-cut division of power on this topic could be settled by allowing the President to command the military only after Congress has declared war, but politics as usual distorts the black and white into grey. This was proven by the actions of many early presidents. Polk sent soldiers to Mexico, Lincoln began the Civil War, and FDR assisted WWII well before a declaration of war . To combat this degree of ambiguity, the 93rd Congress of the United States passed The War Powers Act of 1973 . Among many provisions, this act mandated a 60 day period for the president to wage war. The last night I spent in Tucson before moving away to college has proved to be the most heartbreaking and bittersweet life experience Iââ¬â¢ve ever had to endure, yet it is also my fondest memory of home. I wanted that night to last forever because I never wanted to see tomorrow come. August twentieth was my last night in Tucson. The last night I had to spend with my family, my friends, and my dog. That would be my last night to spend in my own house, with my own personal bathroom, and a big bed. That would also be my last night to pack all of my important material possessions and then downsizing because my dorm room probably wouldnââ¬â¢t hold everything I thought I ââ¬Å"needed.â⬠The night began with that afternoon at what we call the ââ¬Å"G.R. Most of the women were mingling with each other, each one almost in tears listening to others talk about how hard ââ¬Å"letting goâ⬠of their own children would be and fearing the next few days when my friends would be away to different colleges. My friends and I were busy talking amongst ourselves and watching my younger cousins dazzle us in the pool with their most recent dive or trick. Finally, someone... ... ever had to do. Who knew it would be so difficult to leave those people who shaped the person you are today? I had to face the people that I loved so much and say good bye. I knew I would see them again, but somehow that wasnââ¬â¢t a comforting thought. The only thing I could seem to think of was how hard it was to leave and how excruciating it felt. This experience has left a huge impression on my life. I realized how much I love my life and the people in it. I recognized the fact that this was me, growing up and becoming an adult. I also finally understood the meaning of ââ¬Å"family.â⬠Even though I was leaving my home of eighteen years, I knew I still had a wonderful place to return to. That chapter of my life ended beyond perfectly. Although that night was somewhat depressing it was also filled with fun, laughter, and love. It is by far, my favorite memory of home.

Faust and Job Essay
While he was yet speaking , there came also another, and said, The fire of God is fallen from heaven, and hath burned up the sheep, and the servants, and consumed them; and I only am escaped alone to tell theeâ⬠(Bridge Builderââ¬â¢s Bible, Job. 1.12-16). Job loses his possessions, his children,and he suffers health wise. He becomes very ill, but no matter what life brought him he still remained faithful to God. Job could have easily given in as Faust did. In this life we have choices to make whether they be good or evil. We must suffer the consequences for every wrong deed we choose. It takes a strong will power to be determined to do right like Job. Faust believes there is a narrow limitation on the world in which he have been living until he interacts with Mephistopheles. Faust feels he knows enough about philosophy and heros of old legends. He now recalls for a divine law that proves that this action is the ruling force of the universe. This pact deal that was made was set up to fail Faust. Faust did not believe in a heaven or hell, which means he is betting his life rather than selling his soul. In Faustââ¬â¢s mind he is not sure if a eternal life even exists. If he gave up the world that he was living in he really felt that he would be just giving up something that dissatisfied him any way. Faustââ¬â¢s desires is not so much an evil one, but the idea that he has made this pact deal with the devil brings on many concerns about this decision he has made. The devil is unsure of his own ability to fulfill all the request that Faust made to him. However, the devil accepts these challenges and make sure the pact deal is signed in blood. Faust is very eager at this point to taste all the aspects of life that he thinks he have neglected. Although at first Faust rejects the offers made by Mephistopheles, he still ends up given in to this temptation. Faust should have kept his belief when saying, ââ¬Å"the worldââ¬â¢s pleasures cannot end his doubts or satisfy his needsâ⬠(Cliffnotes:Faust study iii). Faust is being taking advantaged of because Mephistopheles knows Faustââ¬â¢s weaknesses. He knows that Faust is striving to understand the universe and his place in it, while Mephistopheles has something totally different in mind from Faust. Faust just happened to be at the crossroads in his life. He was a very well-esteemed man and an intelligent scholar who was highly looked on. The book of Faust came out during the eighteenth centuries, so attitudes then may have had an impact on how people, in particular Goethe may have viewed life. During that time attitudes were focused more toward earthly life and beyond. Looking at Faust attitude compared to Jobââ¬â¢s, I see that Job was strong while Faust was weak. I find them to be different from each other just by viewing who gave in to this trick. It is plain to see that Faust gave in and Job stood his ground. It means a whole lot when someone can stand their grounds and not be moved by nothing in this world. Jobââ¬â¢s world was in turmoil, but this did not interfere with his faith nor the confidence he had. Satan was concerned with getting souls that he can keep for eternity. He used any tactics he could to seduce Faust. The Devil offered earthly things to blindfold Faust. The Lord did let Mephistopheles know that when he grants him permission to engage in Faustââ¬â¢s life, Faust will be fully aware of the righteous path, whether he chooses it or not. I believe at this point Faust is beginning to see Mephistopheles for who he really is. I had came to this conclusion personally when I read these lines: ââ¬Å"Your real being no less than your fame Is often shown, sirs, by your name, Which is not hard to analyze When one calls you the Liar, Destroyer, God of Flies. Enough, who are you then? Part of that force which would Do evil evermore, and yet creates the good. What is it that this puzzle indicates? I am the spirit that negates. Mephistopheles was a smooth talking and slick which reminds me of Satan himself. Job at some point in his life wished he had never been born. How can anyone fault Job for feeling the way he did after going through these horrible storms in his life. He had to face these mountains and conquer his fears. I do understand Job was human, so he had a right to feel saddened or possibly even lonely. Faust longs to find something absolutely enduring so that he can end his alienation. He rather ignore reality just to have pleasures fulfilled for a few years rather than having something that will please him forever. Faust understands life, but he wants to dig deeper into the truth about supernatural things. In return for his search on this he turns to magic which leads him to making this pact deal with the devil in the first place. Satan plan he had for Job did not work as God said. Mephistopheles tries to criticize God by saying he made an imperfect world. However, he did help God carry out his will through using this pact deal with Faust. Satan main goal and purpose is to defeat God by taking over every soul. It is evidently true just reading: ââ¬Å"And in return, what do you hope to take? Thereââ¬â¢s so much time so who insist? No, no! The Devil is an egoist And would not just for heavenââ¬â¢s sake Turn into a philanthropist. Make your conditions very clear; Where such a servant lives, danger is nearâ⬠(Goethe 711). It is obvious that Mephistopheles is not on Faust side. Once he get him right where he wants him he is going to surely take his life. What good can come from someone when they encourage another human being to take their life. No friend would want to see you die. I consider that to be for someone who hates you and they must be cold-hearted. One comes to know good by knowing evil. A person can not come to know God without knowing this knowledge. True knowledge is gotten only from experience. Just like the Devil Mephistopheles often speaks the truth to get what he wants. Faust wanted much and he was never satisfied so greed began to take over his life. Job was satisfied with what God had given him and that is how he was able to stand on the word of God. He return for Jobââ¬â¢s pain God restored to him everything that he had lost. He gave him back more than what he had before. Faust struggle with self worth causes him to have an inability to have faith in God. However, God does not give up on Faust. Believe it or not God gives us many chances in this world today because he has not given up on us either. God knew Faust struggled, but he allowed him to reach his low point in order to draw him back. Mephistopheles duty was to lead Faust down a dark road. If Satan could have done the same thing to Job he would have, but Job was too strong for him. Therfore, Satan fault a loosing battle with Job. In the process Faust is responsible for three deaths in this story, although he was influenced by Mephistopheles. God has given us the spirit of unlimited belief.The battle really begins in our mind. It is our will and emotions that control what we do or think. We must stop limiting God by the level of our faith or belief. He is and will always be the God of the impossible. People must demand that Satan leave them alone and not just ask this. It is good to know that by the power of the holy spirit we have authority over Satan to tell him what to do. Satan must be put in his place. Satan is a great pretender, so donââ¬â¢t be deceived by his fierce growl. I am encouraged knowing this scriptures, ââ¬Å"and put on the whole armor of God so that ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wickedâ⬠(Bridge Builderââ¬â¢s Bible, Ephesians6.11-18). After being tested it feels good to know t hat someone passed their test and did not fail. I must be strong myself and not get caught up in the crossroads of my own life. People must have faith in order to make it in this world. Nothing can compare to what God has to offer us in heaven. God is amazing and he is the almighty whom we must answer to. Illiteracy as Third World Problem Essay
It is true that illiteracy is becoming a serious problem in industrialised nations. This is surprising as most people think that this is a problem only in under-developed nations such as in parts of Africa and India. Illiteracy is related to many other problems such as poverty, over-population and governmental corruption. Let us take a more detailed look at the causes of this growing problem in many Western nations. One of the most obvious reasons for the increase in illiteracy is the advent of television. Children no longer have to read to obtain information. Neither do they have to read to relax. Today children get home from school and go straight to ââ¬Å"the boxâ⬠to watch their favorite program. Watching television is much easier and more exciting than reading. Another reason for the increase in illiteracy is the fact that so many women work. This means that children are often alone at home and so they are unsupervised. When parents get home they are often too tired to spend quality time whit their children. It is also true that many people blame schools for the decline in illiteracy. In many countries there has been a move away from teaching basic skills such as reading and writing. There are many effects of this growing illiteracy rate. The most obvious is unemployment. This may in turn lead to alcohol and drug abuse. Ultimately the economy of the country begins to suffer and there is a drop in living standards. To address this problem, parents need to become more aware of their responsibilities and schools need to consider a change in their teaching methods. If this worsening trend is not reversed, the problem of illiteracy will become very serious.
